Magnitude 4.2 earthquake shakes Coachella Valley, centered south of Twentynine Palms.

Monday morning's earthquake was centered south of Twentynine Palms.

Monday’s earthquake is the largest one felt in the Coachella Valley since July 5, when Ridgecrest was rocked by a magnitude 7.1 temblor that shook much of Southern California.

It followed a magnitude 6.4 quake that also was centered near Ridgecrest on July 4. The area has since been hit by a swarm of aftershocks, including a magnitude 2.6 that happened at 9:31 a.m. Monday south of Trona, which is about 20 miles east of Ridgecrest.

The most recent earthquake centered near the Coachella Valley was a magnitude 3.6 quake Friday morning southeast of Anza.

 It had three aftershocks with preliminary magnitudes of 1.9, 1.7 and 1.6.
